Navigation and app bars
Where each device starts, how people move between views, and how the app bars and toolbars are laid out.
Start screens
- BOOX opens the Month calendar with a day sidebar.
- The phone opens today's agenda and ToDos.
- On both devices, a launch reopens the topic that was open at the last pause, on that device's last page. If the topic no longer exists, it opens the Topics overview.
Phone navigation
- Tabs: Todos / Notes / Journal / Search, in a 64 dp bar with a 1 dp top divider.
- The current tab has a 56 × 28 dp pill (sage with a 1 dp accent outline) behind its icon and a Bold label.
- The phone app bar is 64 dp (72 dp at large text), with a Title Large title and a Body Small context line.
- Editors and the phone calendar have no bottom navigation.
Today
- The agenda, one divider, then ToDos.
Notes
- Meeting and topic notebooks by name, under Bold accent letter headings.
- Each letter heading opens the A–Z index.
- An outlined “Jump to A–Z” button opens a six-column sheet of outlined 48 dp letter keys. Letters without notebooks are disabled.
- No letter-in-view highlight.
- Accented initials file under their base letter. Anything outside A–Z files under “#”.
Journal
- A “Today's journal” card (Calendar, Open today), then entries grouped by month.
Search
- The search field with × Clear, then All / Journal / Meetings / Topics chips (wrapping when narrow), then a result count.
- No hits: only “No results”. There is no handwriting-search hint.
- The global Search action opens this tab with the field focused.
- No recent searches: the app does not record them.
Note rows
- Note rows in Notes, Journal and Search are 64 dp, with a sage kind tile and a chevron.
- Rows never show page counts, edit dates or handwriting snippets: the app does not record them.
Global actions
- One group, anchored to the right of the app bar.
- Always available: Saved meeting notes, Topics, Calendar, Search, Sync and Settings.
- The order is editable and the same in every primary view. The default order ends Calendar → Search → Sync → Settings.
- The current screen's action is shown selected.
- Calendar always opens the calendar view. Source visibility and subscriptions live in Settings → Calendars.
- While Settings is open, the global app bar stays interactive.
- Tablet: the group follows a separator.
- Phone: actions fold into ⋮, starting from the front of the order, when the title column would drop below 96 dp. Sync never folds.
Tablet overview app bar
- One 48 dp bar holds: the period date (22 sp, at least 120 dp), ‹ › after it, a separator, a borderless Month / 3 days / 5 days / Day dropdown, then the global group.
- The date keeps its 120 dp first. Global actions that no longer fit fold into ⋮ from the front of the order, as on the phone. Sync never folds.
- Saved meeting notes stays a direct shortcut in the global group.
- The calendar view order is Month → 3 days → 5 days → Day until the app implementation changes.
- The sidebar's ToDos heading is plain text: no chevron, no expanded-list navigation, no overview app-bar icon.
Editor app bars
- Tablet journal, meeting and topic editors use one 48 dp app bar:
- Left: Back (meetings, topics and journals opened from the calendar), then the title.
- The title is the topic name in a topic, and is dropped when less than 48 dp is left.
- Right: the editing tools, end-aligned, then the global group.
- The tablet editor bar reserves the whole global group first: 48 dp per action + 8 + 17 dp (6 × 48 + 8 + 17 dp by default).
- Phone editors have a 56 dp top bar: Back, the title or topic name, the page label, Sync, ⋮. Under 400 dp the page label folds into the » tray.
- Phone editors have a 56 dp bottom tool bar, within thumb reach.
- The phone reader shows its tools unselected; the first tool tap starts editing. There is no Edit/Done control.
- Note editors, their » tray and Edit menu bar have no ToDos shortcut.
Editing toolbar
- Toolbars show whole controls only. They never clip actions or need undisclosed horizontal scrolling.
- There is one ordered editing-tool area, left of the global group. No separate left/right zones and no hidden priority for former right-side tools.
- The bar shows the longest prefix of the saved editing order that fits, keeping 48 dp for ». Everything else goes in the » tray.
- Editing tools are never labelled dropdowns.
- Toolbar icons are ink. Delete page is red.
- Settings uses the gear icon.
Default editing tools
Journals and meeting notes start with these tools, in this order. Every other editing action starts in the » tray and can be placed through Edit menu bar.
| # | Tool |
|---|---|
| 1 | Pen |
| 2 | Eraser |
| 3 | Pen presets |
| 4 | Lasso |
| 5 | Undo |
| 6 | Redo |
| 7 | Previous page / page count / Next page |
| 8 | Add page |
| 9 | Delete page |
- The page count reads “2/3” in tabular figures and is announced as “Page 2 of 3”.
- There is no floating page count on the canvas.
- Delete meeting notes lives with the meeting details, in red.
» tray
- Holds the tools that do not fit plus the unplaced tools, in the user's saved order.
- Icons in a frame with a 2 dp ink outline and 8 dp corners. No scrim.
- Tablet: one row, 4 dp below the bar. Phone: two rows, above the tool bar.
- Its right edge sits on » when it fits; otherwise it shifts left to stay 8 dp inside the screen.
- Unplaced pen presets stay in the Pen presets popover, not the tray.
- The separate page arrows are left out while Page navigation is on the bar.
- Separators (1 × 24 dp, 17 dp total) fall between tool kinds: draw · history · pages · page edits · page settings · zoom · lock zoom. Inside the tray they have 4 dp margins.
- Placeable pen presets carry no numbers: their glyph and a label such as “Pen: Fountain”.
Edit menu bar
- Exactly two placement groups: Editing tools and Global actions.
- Global actions can be reordered within their group.
- Editing tools can be placed, reordered or returned to the » tray.
- The toolbar preview and the palette share one modal window, so drag and drop works between them.
- Narrow screens stack the two preview groups; BOOX keeps a single row.
- The palette is at most 760 dp wide and high. Its 48 dp scrollbar can be dragged.
- Reset sits on its own row. Cancel and Save stay together.
- The view underneath stays mounted.
Limits and behaviour
- Only the current version-3 layout, with EDITING and GLOBAL groups, is stored. Old layouts and retired toolbar items have no migration path.
